The History of Santiago High School
"First Day"
If you have pictures of Santiago in the beginning, or have a story to tell of the history of the school, please contact me at the link listed below. I would love to fill this section with the story of how the school was named, the mascot chosen, etc.

My older sister, Alma Wade (Bonds) was a '65 Graduate of Santiago High and its very first incoming class of Freshman. I had asked her when she started going to Santiago, because I wasn't even sure, since I was still at OA Peters, Jr. High. She told me that at the very beginning of the year, Santiago High was not completed and Alma was bussed over to Bolsa Grande High. But, later during the school year, Santiago High did open and began classes and Alma was in its beginning freshman class in 1961.
The picture you show in your web site, however, is not from 1961. The reason I know that for sure, is that there are two of my classmates in the picture. This picture you have is from 1963 at the earliest. Notice the interstate is not in the picture. If you were to look out into that background today, you'd see the Garden Grove spur (freeway). I think that was built in the summer of 1964-1965, to my best recollection. I remember walking up onto the huge mounds of dirt and taking a short cut home over the interstate before it was completed.
I lived about a block or so away from the interestate in Shamrock park, which was the name of our little area, way back when. We lived just back from the Alpha Beta store. We actually lived on Pinto Rd. I still remember our phone number too. Some things, you just can't forget. hahah. Weird huh? Anyway, Just thought you could at least have something to go on. You would have thought SOMEBODY would have snapped a picture of the very first day of school....haha. Your friend and fellow grad ('67)
